AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD

  • The colonial American Time period is from 1607 to 1776
  • This time led to the American Revolutionary War and the establishment of the constitution
  • Settlers came to the new land to find religious freedom, land and opportunity for wealth
  • The new comers were still governed by the laws of European homelands
  • All of these laws led to anger, dissension, and rebellion

SALEM WITCH TRIALS

  • The infamous Salem witch trials began during the spring of 1692,
  • It all began with a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts,
  • They claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.
  • This led to hysteria within society and was the cause of over hundreds of deaths
  • Most trials led to death, there was no way out once you were accused

MCCARTHYISM

  • the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence.
  • It also means "the practice of making unfair allegations or using unfair investigative techniques
  • It was in the 1950s to 1960s where people thought communism infiltrated the US government
  • Mccarthyism ties back to the salem witch trials where people were accused without evidence
  • Arthur Miller was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and subsequently blacklisted

HOW IT ALL TIES TOGETHER

  • McCarthyism and the Salem Witch Trials dealt with unfair trials
  • It also dealt with a society that was to paranoid to see the cause and effect
  • Early colonies had no idea what to do hence the hysteria in Salem
