Who was Adolf Hitler and why did he want to persecute the Jews?

~Adolf Hitler was the founder and leader of the Nazi party.
~He wanted to cleanse the nation by systemically extermination millions of Jews and non-aryans.

CONCENTRATION CAMPS

  • The largest and most lethal of the Auschwitz camp
  • Prisoner's personal identities were taken mainly by the act of tattooing their arms with numbers
  • Between 1.3-1.5 million people were murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz -- more than 90% were Jews.

WHAT WAS BERGEN-BELSO?

  • A concentration camp located near Hanover in northwest Germany.
  • Jews with foreign passports were kept there to be exchanged for German nationals imprisoned abroad, although very few exchanges were made.
  • Most prisoners were not subjected to forced labor.
  • Margot Frank and Anne Frank transferred there in late October 1944.

THE HOLOCAUST

  • Once World War II began, the Nazis ordered all Jews to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing so they could be easily recognized.
  • Jews were forced to live in specific areas of the city called the ghetto.
  • Anne Frank's concentration camp was liberated by British troops just weeks after her death.
  • Young children were particularly targeted by Nazis to be murdered during the Holocaust.

Why was life difficult for Jews in Amsterdam in 1942?

~ In July 1942, the Germans began mass deportations of Jews to killing centers in occupied Poland.
