What is insulin?

  • Insulin is a hormone created by our pancreas and helps prevent diseases such as hyperglycemia, diabetes mellitus.

The Beginning

  • In 1889 it was discovered by Joseph Von Mering and Oskar Minkowski that the pancreas has the ability to control glucose metabolism
  • The Found this out when Joseph and Ockar removed pancreas from dogs and it caused onset diabetes.

The Discovery

  • In 1921 Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best found that if they closed of the pancreatic ducts which caused the pancreas to produce unique cells.
  • Soon after the took out these cell and found that if they injected it into a dog with diabetes that is temporally cured the dog of all the symptoms.

The Product

  • This eventually lead to artificially produced insulin that could be used to treat a human in 1981
