Mrs. Hay had sent the Burnell children a doll house, it was very unique and large. The Burnell children (three girls) were overjoyed to find the beautiful doll house. The next day at school with great excitement, the three girls were all burning to tell the other children about they're present. The eldest daughter, Isabela told her friends during the lunch break at school. All the children came near to see the doll house, but the two Kelvey sisters. These two sisters were part of the lower class, there father was in jail, and they're mother worked hard scrubbing floors all day. One day Kezia the youngest Burnell daughter asked her mother if she could invite the two Kelvey sisters over, but her mother simply just laughed and, and told her not to ask such a silly question again.

One day the two Kelvey sisters came near the Burnells house to see the doll house, but that very moment the Burnell's aunt came out and shooed the sisters away. They were hated by all. Kezia saw no difference between her and the other girls, she hadn't yet seen what the difference was between her and the Kelsey's, in her society, in the opinion of the adults.

The short story "The doll house" presents a theme of high hierarchy in a society. Inclusion and exclusion between social classes.
