Religious Significance:
At the center of the dome there is a rock which is the believed location of where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son. Now Muslims believe that the rock symbolizes the night journey of Muhammad.

Location:
The location of the Dome of the Rock is located in Jerusalem, sitting on the Haram al-Sharif, which is the highest point in Jerusalem.

History:
The Dome of the Rock is one of the first Islamic buildings to be built. It was built by Abd al-Malik between the years 685-691/2, it was built to be a religious focus point for his supporters.

FACTS:

  • The Dome of the Rock contains an inscription 240 meters long
  • Below the rock is a small chamber and no one knows why it's there to this day
  • The Church of Holy Sepulcher and the Dome of the Rock have almost the same size domes.

  • The Dome of the Rock is also called Qubbat al-Sakhra
  • The Dome of the Rock was repaired and replaced multiple times
  • The Dome is 65 feet in diameter
