THE WEATHER

  • Year round, the average temperature is 77F
  • The nicest time of year is between November and April
  • Most people call our weather the endless summer,
  • Due to being warm and sunny year round, everywhere in the country

CATEDRAL PRIMADA DE AMERICA

  • Located in Santo Domingo, built in 1540
  • One of the earliest cathedrals in The Americas
  • Known for its dramatic architecture

ALCAZAR DE COLON

  • Located in Santo Domingo, built in 1512
  • Built by Diego Colon, Christopher Columbus' son
  • Houses some of the most important European late medieval and renaissance works of art
  • In 1586 It was ransacked by Sir Francis Drake and his forces
  • Restored in 1955

  • Has a government like the U.S.
  • It has three branches of government, executive, legislative, and judicial.
  • With a president, Vice President, and cabinet.
  • Representative democracy
  • The currnecy is peso (one dollar is 16 pesos)

HISTORY

  • First named Hispaniola by Christopher Columbus
  • Spaniards establish a colony at Santo Domingo
  • Later becomes capital of all spanish colonies
  • Explored by Columbus on his first voyage
  • Battle between Haitians and Spaniards for control over the island

POPULATION AND ACTIVITIES

  • The Dominican Republic has a population of 10.4 million
  • They have a cross country ATV track
  • Beautiful beaches surrounding the island
  • Tropical deep sea fishing
  • Island history tours

FOOD

  • There is plenty of unique foods in the Dominican
  • Los tres golpes, a breakfast of fried salami, eggs, mangú, and queso frito
  • Batata Frita, a variety of sweet potato that is fried
  • Batida De Lechoza, a papaya smoothie
  • Galletas Martín, a special ginger cookie topped with suspiro
