THE DUMBO OCTOPUS

CLASSIFICATIONS

  • Common Name: Dumbo Octopus
  • Scientific Name: Grimpoteuthis
  • It is in the Cephalopoda class in the Opisthoteuthis family

HABITAT AND ECOSYSTEM

  • The Dumbo octopus lives in the depths of the ocean from 100-5,000 meters
  • It qualifies to live in the Abyssal Zone. (3,000-6,000 meters)

WHAT IT DOES

  • It eats crustaceans, worms, bivalves and small fish if they are available
  • The only real predators are Killer Whales and Sharks that venture out that deep
  • The Dumbo Octopus needs clean water and a constant supply of food

THREATS TO LIFE

  • The Dumbo Octopus isn't over fished or hunted, so their is no natural threats
  • Illegal dumping of chemicals that can be filtered through the body killing them

FUN FACTS

  • Is named because of its disney like ears
  • Is the deepest dwelling octopus known to man
  • Uses a vortex like propulsion system
  • Its flaps have small harpoon like barbs to hold prey
  • It can use camouflage to hide from predators but it doesn't produce ink
