LOUISIANA PURCHASE

  • The United States bought the Louisiana purchase.
  • The Louisiana purchase was bought by Thomas Jefferson.
  • The United States bought the Louisiana purchase for 15 million dollars.
  • The Louisiana purchase was double the size of the United States.

LEWIS AND CLARK

  • Meriwether Lewis and William Clark went on an expedition to look at the Louisiana purchase.
  • Their guide was Sacajawea, she was a Shoshone woman who joined to help guide them.
  • They came back with valuable information on people, plants, animals, and geography.
  • This was probably the most important expedition.

THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING

  • The second Great awakening was the rise of religion in the 1800's .
  • Cullan Bryant of Massachusetts, wrote poetry.
  • One of the most successful American songwriters was Stephan C. Foster.
  • George Bingham, painted fur traders, riverboat workers, and political speakers.

PLANTATION CULTURE

  • Southern plantation culture involved northerners living close together.
  • Southerners mostly living in non small farms or large plantations.
  • Planters or large landowners, became the souths economic and social leaders.

SLAVERY LIFE

  • Most enslaved people in the south worked on farms and plantations.
  • They labored together from dawn to dusk and were closely supervised.
  • Enslaved men usually worked in the fields.
  • Enslaved woman usually cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and sewed.

LIFE IN THE NORTHERN CITIES

  • Life in northern cities included the huge rise In industries.
  • This lead to the gap between richer and poorer people.

LIFE IN THE WEST

  • Life in the west would include living on the frontier was rigorous.
  • Pioneers had to deal with uncertain climate, limited supplies, and failing crops.
  • Dispute hardships, they still enjoyed things and had things like weddings.
  • There were few roads and the westerners found it hard to transport crops.
