WHAT IS IT

  • After James II was forced from throne
  • Parliament offered crown to his daughter, Mary
  • Her husband was William of Orange
  • Parliament insisted that they submit to a Bill of Rights
  • Reflects struggle between monarchs and Parliament

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF ITEM 6? WHY WAS IT INCLUDED?

  • Item 6: raising or keeping a standing army
  • Within the kingdom in time of peace, unless
  • In consent of Parliament, is illegal.
  • ANSWER- there is no real need for an army when there is peace.
  • It was included so that no one would start fighting when there is peace.

WHY DID PARLIAMENT INCLUDE ITEM 9? WHY WOULD THEY THINK IT WAS IMPORTANT?

  • Item 9: freedom of speech and debates or proceedings
  • in Parliament ought not to be challenged in any place out of Parliament
  • ANSWER: This was included because they did not want anyone to question
  • Their authority. They thought this was important to include because
  • They didn't want anyone overthrowing them.
