PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE ENVIORNMENT OF THE PANAMA CANAL

BY Kaylee Hanks, Casey Declue, Elizabeth Wilkinson, Sylvia Hofstetter

PLANTS IN THE AREA

  • What we discovered is that the surrounding forest around the Panama
  • Canal is being torn down. There are less and less trees there every year.
  • We heard over 70 % of the forest has been cut down already.

PLANTS

  • We saw hundreds of different types of plants. Some of
  • these plants are rare. And if people keep tearing them
  • out, they could cause a rare plant to die out in that area.
  • There are still tons of trees in the forest surrounding the
  • canal, yet we noticed a big change in the size compared to a couple years ago.

WHAT THIS EFFECTs

  • The forest around the canal need lots of rain. We discovered that
  • If more of the trees are torn down, it may not rain as much as it used
  • to. This could cause the canal to possibly shrink. Plus the fresh water
  • in the canal would decrease. Lake Gatun is connected to the canal, and
  • would become dirtier. That lake is Panama City's drinking water.

The Map

ANIMALS

  • We saw tons of species living in the forest around the canal.
  • But the cutting down trees effects them too. Some of these
  • guys have lost their homes, and have had to move closer together
  • since the forest is becoming smaller. The decrease in fresh water effects
  • them too.

FISH PROBLEMS IN THE CANAL

  • We learned that the country of Panama is thinking on making the canal
  • even bigger. We also realized that bigger fish were coming in from
  • the oceans. These fish could eat a lot of the population of another
  • species. And possibly cause them to become endangered in that
  • area.

SALT WATER

  • We discovered that the fresh water in the canal becomes more
  • salty every couple of years. The salt is getting in from the oceans that
  • the canal leads out to. This could lead to salt water fish moving in.
  • And the fresh water fish wouldn't have places to go, since they would
  • just swim down the canal and into another ocean.

SUMMARY

  • To sum it all up, we discovered that the Panama Canal
  • is having a lot of environmental problems. The forest around are being
  • torn down, causing animals to loose their homes, and the fresh water
  • in the canal to decrease. The canal itself is turning more and more
  • into salt water every year. And the fish in the canal could be endangered

More of the summary

  • due to salt water fish moving in, and them not being able to
  • survive in the salty water.
