BACKGROUND OF THE GOLDFIELDS

  • Gold was first discovered in NSW and VIC in the 1851.
  • The goldrush changed many lives.
  • 1/4 of people on the goldfields were women.
  • James Mcbrien found specs of gold near Bathrust NSW.
  • The goldrush was in Australia and many people from around the world came to dig gold.

  • Ballarat is very close to Melbourne.
  • Wathaurong aboriginals named Ballarat.
  • Ballarat means 'resting place'.

GOLD LICENSES

  • In 1851 a new law stated that miners had to get a monthly miners license.
  • If you had a license and accidentally left it home you either go to jail or pay a fine
  • Miners hated gold licenses, but they had to get them.
  • Along with the license miners had to buy tools and land.
  • Some miners without licenses hide from cops.

James Scobie's Death:
James Scobie was a Ballarat gold miner who was murdered in the Eureka hotel. The murderer was Bentley, he was the owner of the Eureka Hotel. Eventually he got the blame, but the cops suggested that Bentley was forgiven and it was James's fault. The other miner thought it was unfair a also thought about getting their rights. So an army of miners made a huge bonfire and burnt all their licenses. Which cause the Eureka Stockade😦😧

MEETING ON BAKERY HILL

Meeting on Bakery Hill:
Bakery Hill is also very memorial and historical place. It was a day before the Eureka Stockade. Here they swore the eureka oath. The miners fought for victory (reclaim respect and to be listened to. And the cops fought to protect themselves.the new leader elected by the miners named Peter Layor. POuOEd

The Eureka Flag:
The Eureka Flag was first used in the eureka rebellion.It flew for the first (recorded) occasion on Bakery Hill as a symbol of the resistance of the gold miners during the Eureka Stockade rebellion in the year 1854. Beneath this flag, Peter Lalor, leader of the Ballarat Reform League, swore this oath to the affirmation of his fellow demonstrators: "We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties."

Preperation for Battle.
Miners burned their licenses in a bonfire (because the felt unfair ).Miners elected Peter Layor as their leader. All the miners and cops gathered around the Eureka flag. Peter Layor was in centre with everyone's attention. Then in a really loud voice hundreds heard he said he had declared war!!!🙀That night miner rushed to the blacksmith who made thick and thin rifles for the preparation for the Eureka stockade.
