The Fall of rome

  • In 330 C.E., the emperor Constantine moved his capital 850 miles to the east, to the ancient city of Byzantium.
  • Byzantium > New Rome > Constantinople > Istanbul

The Fall of Rome

  • After Constantine, power over the empire was unusually divided between two emperors.
  • Two Emperors = Two Capitals = Two Romes (Eastern & Western)

The Fall of Rome

  • Rome became threatened by invading GERMANIC tribes.
  • In 410 C.E., one of these tribes attacked and looted Rome itself.

  • In 476 C.E., the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire was driven from his throne.
  • The western empire began to DISSOLVE into separate kingdoms ruled by different tribes.

  • After 476 C.E., it became called the BYZANTINE EMPIRE.
