PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE TOP THREE REASONS ROME FELL

BY: ALISHA SAYANI - 7TH PERIOD

EXTERNAL INVASIONS

Rome was surrounded by many enemies and ended up fighting many wars for many years. The roman empire came under increasing pressure from the invading Germanic tribes.

These wars made Rome weak and vulnerable especially since they didn't even have a proper military to defend themselves and were going through other problems. The Germanic Visigoths revolted and the Romans were defeated by them.

This defeat enabled hundreds of Germans to cross the frontier and later the German Army overthrew the western emperor and took over western Rome. This victory of the Germans cost Rome their western half which is why I believe that the invasions was the number 1 reason that the Romans fell

MILITARY PROBLEMS

Because of the invasions, an army was becoming a grave need but Rome couldn't afford an army because there weren't enough finances as the money was being used to reform other things in Rome.

Roman soldiers became less disciplined and disloyal. The soldiers were also weakened to the point that even the invaders that the Romans defeated before could now defeat Rome.

This is my second reason because since the military was weak Rome couldn't defend itself which led to the invaders being able to easily defeat the Romans. Having a weak and disloyal army led to more invaders which led to the downfall of Rome.

POLITICAL INSTABILITY

After the civil war, there was a military government under the Severan rulers. After those rulers there was a period of disorder. For almost fifty years the throne was occupied by whomever had the military strength to control it.

This created lots of deaths of emperors as they were fighting for power and that internal fight played a role in causing a upheaval.

This is my third reason because a political upheaval does affect the country because if there is no political system them there is disorder and that makes Rome vulnerable.

Even though this wasn't as much of a problem compared to the other problems, it was still an important part of the downfall of Rome.
