• Series of defeats in battles
• Without the Sultan's(Sulieman) strong hand at the helm, corruption occurred
• Lost their technological and military edge.
• European armies were constantly upgrading while Ottoman remained stagnant
• Which in turn, put them at a disadvantage

• Very gradual decline
• Large size= difficulty in foreign exchanges> small economy
• No revenue cause inflammation which led to corruption

SIGNIFICANCE

• Went from being best of best to "The poor man of Europe"
• Created stronger Islamic Nationalism
• The fall also put the Middle East at a greater mercy of foreign
