  • Just before the great famine began there were more than3 million small farmers,cottiers and laborers in Ireland 🇮🇪

WORKHOUSES

  • Huge number of men,women and children were in these workhouses
  • Children who entered these workhouses often never seen there parents again

  • Before the famine began there where people who eat 70 potatoes a day so they relied on potato’s
  • The disease was called blight

END OF FAMINE

  • The end of the famine was met with great relief for the Irish and many other countries
  • Almost 240,000 people died and 200,000 emigrated it was a sad occasion in Irish history

CHARITY

  • Charity organizations helped Ireland deal with this disease by donating food and supplies
  • The Choctaw tribe helped Ireland tremendously

COFFIN SHIP

  • These ships were called coffin ships because many people died on them
  • If people on the ships didn’t die from starvation they often died from disease carried on the ships

  • Landlords often evicted people because they couldn’t pay rent
