WHAT IS THE FIRST FLEET?

  • 11 ships went from England to Australia
  • Arthur Phillip was the commander
  • They took nearly a year to get there.
  • 1787 to 1788

WHY?

WAR!

BRITAIN NEEDS SHIPS!

  • Britain was a very powerful county with lots of enemies.
  • They had run out of timber and flax to build ships.
  • Norfolk Island had lots.

SPAIN

  • Britain and Spain are old enemies
  • Spain controls South America
  • Australia is close for trading
  • Handy base for ships if war starts up again

DUTCH

  • British people love tobacco, cotton, coffee and spice.
  • They grow in the Spice Island and Australia.
  • The Dutch control the S̶pice Islands.
  • The British need Australia.

AMERICA

  • 1784 America had a revolution.
  • They kicked the British out.
  • Now Britain had nowhere to put convicts. The were put in ships called hulks.
  • Then they found Australia and thought it would be a nice prison.

FRENCH

  • England had to race the French because they wanted Austrailia.
  • The French were the enemy too.

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION!

  • Factories replace country jobs
  • Everyone moves from the country to the cities
  • The cities fill up and become overcrowded

ARIVE IN BOTANY BAY 1788

  • Arive in Botany bay in 1788
  • Aboriginals are thinking, "Oh what the heck!"
  • The English were thinking, "A new enemy!!!😃"
  • Life changed for the Aboriginals
  • Some canges were good and some were bad

NEGATIVE EFFECTS

  • Loss of country
  • Loss of food
  • Loss of space
  • Loss of life
