Originally started writing in support of the abolitionist movement.
American diplomat in Spain and ambassador in Great Britain
gout, sciatica in his left leg, and chronic nausea; cancer in his kidneys, liver, and lungs. Died on August 12, 1891

This poem uses the ABAB rhyme pattern which mean that the first and third line of each stanza rhyme. Example: the snow had begun in the gloaming, And busily all the night,
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white...

Lowell uses figurative language. The snow represents his mourning of his daughters death and the healing powers and beauty of nature

The significance of the title is it's the first snowfall since his daughters death. He sees it as a fresh start. The theme is that nature has a way of healing and hiding pain
