  • Became a Palace Museum in 1925
  • Used as housing for Emperors and Dynasties (Ming and Qing)
  • Was forbidden to common folk

THE BUILDING OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY

  • Built from 1407-1420
  • Built under command of Emporer Yongle
  • Golden tiled roofs, and red walls for the Imperial colors
  • Layout based on feng shui

  • 35 feet walls, and a 171 feet moat surround the Forbidden City

  • 90 courtyards, 980 houses, and 8,704 rooms
  • Imperial Palace has 2 courts, the outer and inner courts
  • Inner and outer court seperated by the Gate of Heavenly Purity

  • Hall of Supreme Harmony
  • Hall of Central Harmony

CHANGES OVER THE YEARS

  • Over the centuries different buildings were set in fire, and had to be rebuilt.
  • Most buildings are reconstructions.
