PRESENTATION OUTLINE
WHO FOUNDED THE NEW WORLD??
THE LAND BRIDGE THEORY
- Theory of migration into the New World
- Evidence shows hunting groups from Asia migrated across the Beringia 12,000-40,000 years ago while tracking large game animal herds
- Beringia - land bridge between Asia and North America caused by a drop in water levels from glaciers; now known as the Bering Strait
WHO FOUNDED THE NEW WORLD??
THE CLOVIS PEOPLE
- Clovis people - first human inhabitants of the New World (settled in the Southwest before 9500 B.C.)
- Evidence - spear points discovered near Clovis, New Mexico between 1929 and 1937 matched the artifacts found in Beringia
- However, other artifact discoveries show that humans may have reached the Americas thousands of years before the Clovis people
IN CONCLUSION...
- We may never know who the first person was to reach the New World
- Even though Christopher Columbus was not the first person to reach the New World, he forever changed the New World
- American Colonization began after his discovery of the New World
