THE FRENCH REVOLUTION

THE STORMING OF BASTILLE

  • 3rd estate released prisoners from their cells.
  • First violent action of the French Revolution.
  • Happened on July 14th, 1789.
  • Only around 7 prisoners were inside the Prison.

THE DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN

  • Gave all equal rights to all men.
  • There was no longer a higher class with more power.
  • Happened on August 4th, 1789.
  • Gave less/no power to the King.
  • Document was influenced by Thomas Jefferson & Enlightenment philosophers.

THE WOMEN'S MARCH ON VERAILLES

  • Women marched from Paris to Versailles demanding bread, all the bread that the palace had hoarded.
  • Instead of killing the royal family, they made King Louis XVI come to Paris to see what he has done.
  • They took the King and Queen as Prisoners of the 3rd Estate.

SEPTEMBER MASSACRES

  • The September massacres was a wave of killings in Paris in the year of 1792.
  • The killings lasted 5 days (September 2nd to September 7th).
  • Reason it happened: People believed royalist armies would attack Paris and release the Prisoners so they could join them.
  • By September 6th, 1200-1400 Prisoners were executed.

REIGN OF TERROR

  • Most brutal/violent event during the French Revolution.
  • Killed more than 10,000 people.
  • Over 300,000 people were arrested.
  • Many prisoners died in Prison.
  • Happened in 1794.
