It's time to abolish the monarchy and establish a new French Republic

What is a Republic?

 

A REPUBLIC: a form of government in which power is exercised by the public at large, and affairs of the state are a public concern, not a private one.

In other words..

  • When people have the power
  • They can vote
  • They have a body of chosen representatives
  • There is no monarch or other heditary head of state

The Guillotine

  • Will become famous during this time period
  • Designed for carrying out executions by beheading
  • The last person to be beheaded by guillotine in France was in 1977!

Now what?

  • People couldn't agree on exactly what should happen next
  • There were two sides of the argument..

Right and Left Wing

Depending on where you sit in Parliment

Left Wing

  • Today we use terms like "Liberal" or "Democrat" 
  • Republicanism during the French Revolution
  • Democracy, elections, power to the people
  • Later the term "Left wing" will take other forms such as
  • Socialism, communism, anarchism

Right Wing

  • Today we say "conservative" or "republican"
  • In response to left wing ideologies
  • Supported hierarchy, tradition, and clericalism
Clericalism: formal, church based leadership or the opinion of the ordained clergy
