CHAPTERS 1&2

  • The Authors Intent for these chapters is to explain the setting, characters and how the society functions.

CHAPTERS 3,4&5

  • Theme:Emotions
  • In the book there are no strong emotions allowed, such as love or "stirrings".
  • "It's just the pills. You're ready for the pills that's all. That is the treatment for stirrings." - page 38 The Giver

CHAPTERS 6-8

  • Theme:All good things go to those who wait
  • At the ceremony of 12 The Chief Elder skips Jonas's number, and he fears he will not receive an assignment, but then at the end he is titled as the Receiver of Memory,an extremely honorable assignment.

CHAPTERS 9-12

  • Authors intent: to show us that Jonas is unique fro, the other community members
  • "'Such a selection is very, very rare,' the Chief Elder told the audience. 'Our community has in only one Recevier.'"
