CHAPTERS 1 AND 2

  • Deeper feelings are prohibited

CHAPTERS 6-8

  • Sometimes reassurance can come from the littlest of things
  • "But when he looked out across the crowd, the sea of faces, the thing happened again. The thing that had happened with the apple. They changed. He blinked, and it was gone. His shoulder straightened slightly. Briefly he felt a tiny sliver of sureness for the first time." (Lowry, 64)

  • Honesty is such an important core value that lying seems alarming
  • "What if others-adults-had, upon becoming Twelves, received in their instructions the same terrifying sentence? What if they had all been instructed: You may lie?" (Lowry, 71)

  • To gain continue to gain control of of objects in the world you must give up control of others
  • "Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness. Before my time, before the previous time, back and back and back. We relinquished color when we relinquished sunshine and did away with difference. We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others." (Lowry, 95)
