THE GIVER

CHAPTERS 1-2

• Jonas is unable to make decisions and to control his own future.
• "...he hadn't the slightest idea what Assignment the Elders would be selecting for his future, or how he might feel about it when the day came" (Lowry 19).

CHAPTERS 3-5

• Jonas is consumed by the upcoming ceremony and a new emotion, called a Stirring.
• "Very briefly, a little guiltily, he tried to grasp it back. The Stirrings were gone" (39).

CHAPTERS 6-8

• Jonas attends the ceremony where he is honored with the role of the Receiver.
• "Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory" (60).

CHAPTERS 9-12

• Jonas meets the Giver and discovers how much more there is to his world then what he knew.
• "Once, back in the time of the memories, everything had a shape and size, the way things still do, but they also had a quality called color" (94).
