THE GLOBE HISTORY

  • 1599-1653
  • The theater had many shareholders
  • Landlord was Giles Allen
  • Was built by Peter Smith
  • Architected by Peter Street

GLOBE "2"

  • Fire in 1613
  • During a play of Henry 8th
  • Roof caught on fire
  • Rebuilt in 1614
  • Closed down 1642

AUDIENCE

  • 3 floors
  • 2,000 to 3,000 people
  • Peasants (groundlings) were on the first floor
  • Sat or stood shoulder to shoulder
  • Enjoyed eating hazelnuts

AUDIENCE CONTINUED

  • 800 or more stood on the main floor
  • Disease spread quickly 
  • Black Plague
  • Wiped out millions

STRUCTURE

  • No roof
  • Actors would get wet along with audience
  • Thought to have 20 sides
  • Natural lighting and no heating
  • 6 months to build

THE STAGE

  • Raised 5 feet off the ground
  • 43 feet in width
  • 27 feet in depth
  • There was a trap door
  • Made of timber

THE NEW NEW GLOBE

  • Built in 1997
  • Called 'Shakespeare Globe'
  • 750 feet away from original theater
  • Plays go from May to October
