STATE HISTORY

  • Admitted into the U.S. in 1959
  • "Alaska" comes from an Aleut word (aláxsxaq) meaning "an object to which the sea is directed"
  • Alaska's first settlers were Russians who crossed the Bering Strait

- Was made in a contest between 7-12th graders
- blue symbolizes Alaskan sky, North Star is the future state of Alaska, Big Dipper is a bear symbolizing strength

GEOGRAPHY OF STATE

  • Borders Canada and has Bering straight which when frozen connects to Russia
  • Western Region of U.S.
  • 663,300 square miles, making it the largest state in the union
  • Mount McKinley is the highest elevation at 6,168 meters, Alaska's lowest elevation points are along the coast line
