ABBASID ADMINISTRATION

Bureaucracy

  • Had Abbasid caliphs who were in charge of the army, taxation, finance, coinage, roads, and postal services.
  • Had the Ulama's who were the scholars. who developed the society based on the Quran and Sharia.
  • Had Qadis, who were basically the judges. And heard cases based on the Quran and Sharia.

Administration Cont.

  • moved the capital to Baghdad and put the centralized court there.
  • Caliphs were in charge of each province.

The Idea

  • The idea of separating the land and giving a province to a leader was derived from the Persian Empire.

How it Differed from the Umayyads

  • The Abbasid ...
  • Cosmopolitan
  • did not favor military aristocracy
  • focused on government
  • Did not offensively attack.

The Highest Point

  • Harun al Rashid was the ruler of the highest point.
  • The empire had become extremely wealthy
  • Baghdad became the center of the economy
  • Was extremely liberal.

The Decline

  • Civil war tore the empire apart.
  • Caliphs began to abuse their power and form separate kingdoms.
  • Uprisings and peasantry rebellions.
  • Outsides forces like the Mongols attacked the empire
  • Conquered by the Saljuq Turks
