THE CRASH

  • In October 1929, stock prices fell, and billions were lost
  • The banks had large loans out that couldn't be liquidated
  • People sold over 12 million stocks in fear of falling prices
  • The crash caused businesses everywhere to fail
  • Once lucrative businesses were suddenly worth nothing

FAMILIES

  • Many families split up, as teens went off in search of jobs
  • Unemployment rates skyrocketed to 30%
  • Wages plummeted
  • Shanty towns were towns made of cardboard and paper
  • Shantytown were dirty and unhealthy

THE NEW DEAL

  • Many farming programs gave credit for seeds, land, animals etc.
  • Through farming programs aid was given to many workers
  • Public work programs created thousands of jobs
  • National parks were created, electricity run through cities etc
  • The New Deal helped people get back on their feet
