The Great Depression

1929 - Early 1940's

WWI Impact

The Great War left most of Europe nearly bankrupt

Inflation Crisis

  • During the war, countries had to pay to support their solders 
  • The money was simply not there
  • Country's thought they could just print more money
  • This plan did not work as expected 

Money is Worth Nothing

  • The decision to just print more money failed
  • The value of money was now worthless 
  • People had to go shopping with barrels of cash

UNEMPLOYMENT

No one was buying goods so company's had to close

Looking For Jobs

  • This left many people unemployed 
  • Unemployment rates were at an all time high 
  • This graph shows only the US statistics 
  • However, many other countries went through this too

Germany's Struggle

Germany's Unemployment rates dropped greatly as well

worlds financial Collapse

  • The collapse of one country lead to a collapse in many  
  • The goods that were bought could no longer be bought
  • This lead to many layoffs

Trading

  • IMPORTS 
  • Import rate decreased 
  • The contries just did not have enough money
  • They were unable to produce the goods needed for trade

  • EXPORTS
  • The exports from countries also dropped
  • The world as a whole was suffering 

The Impact

  • Due to the layoffs, many people did not have an imcome
  • They could not pay their bills 
  • The banks were forced to posses their belongings

Black Tuesday

  • The day the stock market crashed 
  • People rushed to sell their stocks
  • Banks forced to close 

Rapid decrease in stock prices

Change!

People & the Gov. decided something needed to change

Taking Charge

  • Countries started to try and fix the damage
  • Britain takes steps to improve its economy
  • France responds to economic crisis
  • Socialist governments find solutions
  • Recovery begins in the U.S.....

The New Deal

  • Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes president 
  • He leads a group of programs called...
  • The New Deal

Purpose & Impact

  • The New Deal is made to help people
  • To give people jobs, stability, and money
  • This helped the U.S. out of the depression
  • People were no longer struggling 
  • The economy was nearly back to normal
