THE START OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Began on Black Thursday, Oct. 24, 1929
  • The stock market crashed (also known as the Wall Street Crash)
  • The worst economic collapse in the history of the modern industrial world
  • Long lasting and very severe

THE WALL STREET CRASH

  • Crash was in New York
  • Began in 1929
  • The crash was the day that the collapse of the share prices happened
  • Its called the Wall Street Crash because it happened on Wall Street
  • Affected the poorest members of most of the world

THE DEPRESSION MADE THINGS WORSE

  • Companies and individuals had borrowed money to produce and buy goods
  • Thousands were unable to repay their loans and over 3,000 banks went backrupt
  • 3,000 banks went bankrupt by 1933
  • Unemployment rose to 14 million by 1933
  • Poverty and unemployment were especially common for poor farmers and blacks

EFFECTS ON THE ELECTION

  • Hoover's limited attempts to improve the economy failed
  • Despite his wealthy background, Roosevelt was very concerned for the poor
  • Roosevelt promised a new deal of positive action to fight the Depression

OUTCOME FOR ROOSEVELT'S DEAL

CHANGE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AMERICANS AND THEIR GOVT.

ROOSEVELT'S NEW DEAL

  • Three R's (relief, recovery, reform)
  • By the end of deal they reformed many aspects of society
  • The aspects are to prevent further depressions in the future

AFFECT ON PEOPLE

  • Many lost their Jobs, Houses, and a lot of their other belongings
  • The Depression didn't treat people with respect

THE ENDING OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Affected many lives
  • Lasted for a long time
  • Closed businesses and a long lasting affect on Wall Street
  • The Depression didn't show respect and fairness to the poor
  • Between 1934 and 1940, they reformed many aspects of society to prevent further depressions

CONNECTION TO NOVEL

  • To Kill a Mockingbird was written after the Great Depression
  • Affected many poor people and in the book Tom Robinson had some effects
  • The Depression came to a conclusion and so did Tom Robinson's trial
