  • Kahle wants to provide access to all knowledge, information, and media, to everyone in the world, at any time
  • His massive collection seeks to preserve every book, image, sound recording, video, software program, etc., ever made.
  • The Internet itself is a powerful information bank

The Internet Archive has been making a full copy of the World Wide Web every two months since 1996.

Internet Archive founded Open Library which seeks to preserve physical books by using impressive scanning technology that when completed, allows the user to see actual pages of the book.

Challenges

  • A goal never achieved?
  • How to store so much content? (electronically)
  • How to store so much content? (physical collection)
  • Funding
  • Engineering
  • Legal and copyright
1. Even Brewster Kahle wonders if Internet Archive and Open Library will ever truly be finished. With so much content already available, and more being created every day, it may be impossible to create an archive of "everything".
2. As you can imagine, electronically storing a record of everything ever created requires an unimaginable amount of storage capability. In 2013, Internet Archive had around 10 petabytes of data. To put this in perspective, ONE petabyte of mp3 data would take 2,000 years to play. The human brain is estimated to store 2.5 petabytes of information... For more approximations of the petabyte follow this link:

Also along these lines, how do you make all that content available to the public? How can you make it easily searchable?

3. Including one copy of every book scanned into Open Library requires quite a lot of storage space, and the appropriate preservation measures to keep it intact.
4. Must have continual funds to manage storage collections, staff, and continue scanning activities.
5. Brewster Kahle had to develop special scanning machines and software to implement his ideas.
6. Obviously lots of potential infringements here, and the need to use information ethically!
