HOW THE GOLDEN AGE STARTED

• Wealth,peace, and harmony prevailed during the golden age{400sB.C.}.
• The peace and wealth allowed education and art to flourish.
• The Delian Leauge formed and created peace by unification.

ARCHITECTURE

• Their architecture consisted of beautiful temples, theaters, & gymnasiums.
• These buildings were decorated with sculptures and other types of art work such as paintings.
• The Acropolis was the central area that possesed the most valuable artistic creations.
• At the peak of the Acropolis a marble temple was built in honor of Athena (Parthenon.)
• The Parthenon is known as the finest example of Greek architecture.

ARCHITECTURE

• Greek temples did not contain many windows.
• Temples were shrines for the gods, not places to meet for worship.
• Colonnades usually surrounded the temples.

ART

• They painted on many different surfaces.
• The best remaining ancient pieces are on vases.
• They painted humans, animals, & mythological events.
• They were greately influence by Egyptian art.
• Eventually, the greeks developed their own style of art.

FAMOUS & INFLUENTIAL ARTISTS

• Vase painters: Douris, Makron, & Kleophrades.
• Pythagoras: discovered the proportion of the human body.
• Phidia:famous sculptor, he also used geometry to create his work.
• Sculptors: Myron & Phidias were the greatest sculptors of the GA.

PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATIONAL INFLUENCES

PLATO

• Ancient philosopher who lived from 327-427 B.C.
• He founded the ACADEMY in Athens.
• Although he made no major discoveries he developed a more rigorous approach to math.
• He believed math was a the way to discover truth.
• He is considered as the inventor of philosophic argument.

SOCRATES

• Ancient philiosopher who lived from 399-470 B.C.
• His way of questioning laid the foundation for the way science works today.
• He was strongly disliked by the people of Athens due to his arrogance.
• His death was recorded by Plato, who was one of his students.
• He valued law so much that when he had a chance to escape from prision he didn't.

ARISTOTLE

• An ancient philosopher who lived from 322-324 B.C.
• Considered one of the greatest thinkers in the world.
• He discovered the four elements {earth, water, wind, &fire}.
• He believed that the sun, moon, & stars were made out of a 5th element called ether.

THEATRE

• Only men were allowed to act and watch plays.
• They did mostly drama.
• They even had Athenian drama competitions that consisted of triliogy & satyr.
• Most tragic actors wore masks.
