THE GREEK POLIS

IMPORTANT TERMS:

  • Polis: an early Greek city-state and the area around it
  • Acropolis: a gathering place on top of a hill
  • Agora: an open area that served as a gathering and market place
  • Assemble: to gather; to meet together

THE POLIS:

  • Athens, Sparta, and Thebes
  • Place where people could meet for political, social, amd religious activities
  • Athens had a popularion of more than 300,000, others much less
  • Only adult males had political rights
  • City-states distrusted one another, due to fierce loyalty

THE ACROPOLIS

  • Place of refuge during an attack
  • Defensive structures typically built ln hills
  • Religious gathering place
  • Center of most large cities

AGORA

  • Found below acropoli
  • Open areas where people could assemble
  • Also used as a marketplace
