PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE HARLEM RENNAISSANCE

BY: CHAICE WEATHERFORD

THE POEM

  • I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table When company comes. Nobody’ll dare Say to me, “Eat in the kitchen,” Then. Besides, They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed— I, too, am America.

WHAT THE POEM IS ABOUT

  • This poem is pretty much saying that no matter the color of the skin, they are still American and shouldn't be treated any different from the whites.
  • This relates to now because most whites are racist towards blacks.

LANGSTON HUGHES

  • Born January 1, 1902
  • Died May 22, 1967
  • He was one of the most known authors in the Harlem Renaissance because he always backed up his race and gave good examples about his and other black lives. Pretty much how they are so much different from the whites.
  • One of his most famous quotes is "Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird, That cannot fly."
