The Haudenosaunee

  • The Haudenosaunee was formed by 5 nations.
  • The five nations were Onieda, Onondaga, Mohawk, Seneca, and Cayuga.

HAUDENOSAUNEE FOOD

  • The Haudenosaunee grew and gathered corn, beans and squash.
  • The Haudenosaunee hunted bears, dear, rabbits, and wild rice.
  • The Haudenosaunee fished fish.
  • They made maple syrup from tree sap

WHERE HAUDENOSAUNEE LIVED

  • They lived in what is now New York.
  • They also lived in other places close to New York

HAUDENOSAUNEE CLAN ORGANIZATION

  • A clan is a group of related people
  • Clan mothers chose the chiefs from the 5 tribes
  • Chiefs are people who settle laws for the whole league of the Haudenosaunee
  • Each clan had a divider next to there house to divide clans

LONGHOUSE

  • A longhouse is a big house used to keep clans warm
  • They would usually build long houses in the winter
  • Long houses were made of wooden poles and bark
  • Clans had fires in there longhouse for cooking and warmth

ONONDAGA

  • Onondaga means people of the hills in their language
  • The Onondaga wove belts of white and purple shells called wampum
  • The arrangement of wampum belts recorded events stories and signs of agreement

CAYUGA

  • Men from the Cayuga tribe hunted deer bear and other small animals
  • The Cayuga once lived in a big rectangle dwelling called a longhouse
  • Cayuga villages included from 30-150 dwelling

SENECA

  • The Seneca was the biggest tribe of the Haudenosaunee
  • The Seneca nation was formed in 1848
  • The Seneca once built their villages on hills and near rivers
  • There are about 8000 Seneca in the world

MOHAWK

  • Today about 40000 Mohawk live in Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec
  • The term Mohawk means people eaters
  • Mohawk warriors we're know for their fierceness in battle

HAUDENOSAUNEE TRADE

  • Haudenosaunee barter without money
  • Haudenosaunee bartered fur for blankets and knives
