Gnosticism

"The world of matter is evil; spirit alone is good"

Matter is Evil therefore:
- Jesus's Bodily resurrection was denied by the Gnostics.
- Marriage was condemned, because of mortal and bodily desires that accompanied it.
- Bodily, and worldly pursuits, as long as it touches on the material, were also abhorred and despised.

Marcionism

"Rejected the Vengeful God for the Good God"

Marcion (ca. 85 - 160)

- "Contradicting God of the Old and New Testament."
- Advocate of the Loving God, Jesus as simply Divine, while cannot reconcile with "vindictive God."
- Formulated his own cannon, priori excluded the Old Testament. Creator of the Universe, God of Justice, Demiurge, stranger to goodness and love

Montanism

"A special inspiration form the Holy Spirit"

Montanus (132 A.D.)

- Claimed that he was the vessel of the Holy Spirit
- Received with doubts, but because of Priscilla and Maximilla, enthusiasm swept away all hesitation.
- In the year 200, Montanism was condemned by Pope Zephyrinus.

Manichaenism

"Unite in a new religion the best elements of the old"

Mani (ca. 216 - 276)

- a persian priest who retained Gnosticism and attitude on matter as evil.
- A fundamental battle between good and evil with opposing forces struggling for human souls.
- Augustine of Hippo, made the belief rise to greater prominence, but later became its ultimate adversary.
