WHAT ARE THEY?

  • Holy days of obligation are feast days on which Catholics are required to attend Mass and to avoid (to the extent that they are able) servile work.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

  • On January 1st.
  • Falls on a Tuesday
  • Always occurs on the eighth day of Christmas.

EASTER SUNDAY

  • On march 31.
  • This ends the 40 days of lent.

ASCENSION

  • On May 9
  • Falls on a Thursday in 2013
  • For most U.S. diocese the faithful will observe the following Sunday.
  • It marks Christ's ascension to Heaven 40 days following his resurrection.

ASSUMPTION

  • On August 15
  • Occurs on a Thursday in 2013
  • Commemorates the death of Mary
  • Reminds us of the assumption without decay of her body into Heaven.

ALL SAINTS DAY

  • On November 1st
  • Immediately follows Halloween
  • Commemorates all catholic saints

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

  • Happens on December 8
  • Honors the conception of Mary
  • Historical records suggest the feast began in the seventh century.

  • In 2013 it falls on a Wednesday
  • Jesus was born this day
