THE PEOPLE AND THE LAND

• Throughout history the climate of the Southwest has influenced the way the region lived.
• Much of the area was so dry that few trees grow there.
• To build their homes, the Southwest Indians used sticks,stones and clay called adobe.
• The climate of the Southwest affected life, many Southwest people were farmers.
• It was also hard to grow crops because of the lack of water .

IRRIGATION

• Irrigation is a way supplying water to crop with streams,ditches or pipes.
• Southwest Indians planted corn deep in the ground so that the roots
• of the plant could get some moisture from the earth.

NATURAL RESOURCES

• The Hopi found natural resources in a dry land.
• The Hopi are among the oldest Indian tribes of the southwest.They began
• living in present-day Arizona before 1350.They are one of the several groups
• of pueblo Indians,their ancestors were the Ancient Pueblo.And one of their villages
• is about 1,000 years old, each village was governed by a single leader.

LIVING IN A DRY LAND

• The early Hopi irrigation to grow beans,squash, and corn,
• their most important crop.
• Corn was the staple crop for the Hopi and it was apart of every meal.
• They also hunted deer,antolpoe, and rabitt.

THE HOPI'S RELIGION

• Religion was very important to the Hopi culture.
• They also believe that their creator lead them to the southwest.
• As caretakers,the Hopi tried to keep their land heathy.
• If their land was heathy,they would have a good harvest and a good rainfall

THE HOPI TODAY

• The Hopi hold jobs in local companies,as teachers or run their own business.
• They still follow cultural traditions, they also still live in their villages in the Southwest and
• continue to take part in dances and ceremonies.Many Hopi are skilled at traditional
• pots,weavings, and baskets, and silver jewelry. Others hold jobs in local companies,
• are teachers, and run thief own business.
