WHAT IS THE HUMAN HEART?

  • The human heart is a muscular organ
  • It is about the size of a closed fist
  • It's job is to pump blood around the body
  • It pumps blood to all of your organs and muscles

PUMPING BLOOD

  • Your heart beats 100,000 times a day
  • In an average life time, it beats 3.5 billion times
  • 2,000 gallons of blood is pumped through your heart each day
  • There are 60,000 miles worth of veins and arteries to pump blood to

LOCATION OF THE HEART

  • Your heart is located in the chest cavity
  • Behind your rib cage and in between your lungs
  • Behind your breast bone
  • You can feel it beat to the left of your chest, or beneith your chin

THE FOUR CHAMBERS

  • Upper left - left atrium
  • Upper right - right atrium
  • Lower left - left ventricles
  • Lower right - right ventricles

VALVES

  • Valves are the tubular shaped muscles on all sides of your heart
  • They stop the back flow of blood
  • There are four main valves - mitral, aortic, pulmanary, tricuspid
  • The Tricuspid holds blood coming in and is in the right atrium
  • The pulmanary gives blood to the lungs and is in the right ventricle

VALVES

  • The Aortic valve allows blood to leave the heart it is in the left ventricle
  • The Mitral valve collects oxygenated blood from the lungs is in the left atrium

WHAT ABOUT BLOOD?

  • One drop of blood contains 5 million red blood cells
  • By the time you are ten years old, you have up to 4 pints of blood
  • There are four main kinds of blood and different variations of them
  • A, Ab, B, O
  • A new born baby has one cup of blood in his or her's body

VEINS AND ARTERIES

  • Veins and arteries are transportation for blood
  • The Vena Cava is your biggest vein - on the right side of your spine
  • The Aorta is your bigest artery - on the left side of your spine
  • Arteries carry your blood out from your heart, and veins bring it back
  • Atreries carry oxygenated blood out, and veins bring it back to get oxygen

  • One pint of blood donated can save up to three lives
  • It is proven, laughter is medicine - 20% more blood flow
  • Your heart weighs about 7-15 ounces
  • a kitchen fauctet would need to be turned on for 45 years
  • to equal the amount of blood pumped in a lifetime.

  • Man = 70 x per minute Girls = 78 x per minute
