ANCHORAGE TO NOME

The race begins in Anchorage and ends in Nome.

It is 1,100 miles long.

66 MUSHERS

IN 2013 THERE WERE 66 MUSHERS WHO COMPETED.

HUSKY DOGS

EACH MUSHER STARTED WITH 16 DOGS.

RUNNERS

THESE DOGS LOVE TO RUN.

TRAIL MARKERS

THERE ARE WOODEN STAKES EVERY 400 MILES TO MARK THE TRAIL.

THE LAST MUSHER

THE RED LANTERN AWARD IS GIVEN TO THE LAST TEAM IN.

NIGHT TIME

THEY EVEN RACE AT NIGHT.

THE HALFWAY POINT

THE HALFWAY POINT IS THE FAMOUS CHECKPOINT NAMDED IDITAROD.

THE BURLED ARCH

EVERYONE CROSSES THE FINISH LINE UNDER THE BURLED ARCH IN NOME.

HOW MANY DAYS ?

THE RACE CAN TAKE 9 TO 12 DAYS TO FINISH.

CROSSING THE ICE

THE ICE IS SLIPPERY.

BOOTIES

THE DOGS WEAR BOOTIES TO PROTECT THEIR PAWS.

BALTO

THE LEAD DOG WHO HELPED DELIVER LIFE SAVING MEDICINE TO NOME.

GPS

THE MUSHERS HAVE A GPS TRACKING DEVICE ON THIER SLEDS.

STRAW

THE DOGS KEEP WARM AT NIGHT BY SLEEPING ON STRAW.

FOOD

THE MUSHERS FEED THE DOGS AT THE CHECKPOINTS.

THE SLEDS

THE SLEDS CARRY ALL OF THE SUPPLIES.

VETERINARIAN

THEY MAKE SURE THE DOGS ARE HEALTHY AND ARE SAFE TO RUN.

SICK DOGS

WHEN THEY GET SICK OR HURT, THE DOGS ARE FLOWN HOME.

WHEEL DOGS

THE DOGS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SLED ARE CALLED 'WHEEL DOGS'.

LEAD DOGS

THE FIRST DOGS ON THE LINE ARE CALLED THE 'LEAD DOGS'.

LIGHT FOR NIGHTIME

THE MUSHER HAS TO WEAR A HEAD LAMP TO SEE AT NIGHT.

SLEEPING

THE MUSHERS EVEN SLEEP WITH THEIR DOGS ON THE STRAW.
