The Industrial Revolution

HOW IT EFFECTED THE UNITED STATES

How it began

  • The revolution originally began in Britain
  • British inventors found new sources of power
  • They used flowing streams and lots of coal
  • Then power driven machines were created
  • This led to the creation of the first factories

Coming to america

  • US was hard pressed to find another source of money
  • Trade kept stopping, so did income
  • A British Immigrant started the first textile factory
  • Was mechanized and industrialized
  • New England needed industrialization

HOW it worked

  • Events made this possible in the US
  • Interchangeable parts of machines made this happen
  • Factories took industry out homes and shops
  • The factory system allowed mass production
  • All this added to the Revolution

ARRIVING IN AMERICA

  • 3 Bostonian inventors improved this process
  • They had mechanized all three steps
  • This made young people flood to Boston to work
  • Turned town of Lowell into business center
  • People flocked to MA to find work

Affecting AMerica

  • Effected each region differently
  • South had an agricultural effect
  • North had an industrial effect

NORTH

  • North became and industrial producer
  • Factories began popping up all over
  • Had found their new source of income
  • Some farming continued in Northeast

SOuth

  • Had always been more agricultural
  • Invention of cotton gin revolutionized farming
  • Invented by Eli Whitney
  • Changed the way the South farmed

AGRICULTURal differences

BETWEEN THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH

NORTHERN FARMING

  • Northern farms were much smaller and family owned
  • They grew crops easy to grow, such as corn or wheat
  • Industrial Revolution made it easy to transport these goods
  • Also raised animals such as cattle

Southern Farming

  • The cotton gin made it much easier to grow cotton
  • Became the main cash crop of the South
  • This new crop required workers
  • This Revived the Slave Trade
  • # of Slaves grew by a large amount

UNIFYING AMERICA

  • President Madison wanted to unify the nation
  • Felt that America needed to be self sufficient
  • Henry Clay and John C.Calhoun rallied behind him
  • Called this idea the American System

The American System

  • Develop transportation systems
  • Complete other internal imporvements
  • Establish a protective tax
  • Resurrect the National Bank

OTHER INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS

  • Steam locomotive built, made transport easier
  • Started building roads, railroads, and canals
  • Erie Canal connected Atlantic Ocean to Great Lakes
  • Made New York a dominant port City

Tariffs and the National BAnk

  • Tariffs got rid of price advantage that foreign goods had
  • also help pay for internal improvements
  • Called the Tariff of 1816
