south agriculture

  • The land in the south was much harder to work than that in the north

North manufacturing

  • Land was easily manipulated by self sufficient farmers.
  • Then when markets emerged the farmers would specialize in one product .
  • they would then trade for what they needed at the market.

SOUTH MANUFAcTURING

  • In the south the landowners owned slaves that worked the fields for them.
  • They did not do it themselves because the fields were hard to work in.
  • Their slaves also worked machines such as the cotton gin.

tariffs

  • after the war of 1812 british goods stockpiled and sold for way less than american goods
  • Madison and lay put a tariff on imports so the american merchants would have the upper hand.

internal improvements

  • The government made trade better because the provided transportation,
  • they built better roads, and bridges, and eventually a railroad system.
