WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Workers became mere wage owners
  • Depended on their employers for their livelihood
  • Clocks and machines established their rhythm of work
  • Strict punishments
  • Very little rest and social time

CORPORATE LEADERS

  • A business that was owned by thousands of investors
  • Investors received their share when corporations flourished
  • Corporations controlled most businesses
  • Monopolist controlled industries through vertical organization

RURAL

  • 3/4 of the population lived in rural areas
  • In the 1800s

ROLE OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

  • Industrialization made women work outside of home
  • The demand for servants increased as middle class women
  • Grew in numbers
  • Children often had to work to help their families survive
  • Children were forced to work and beaten so they can stay awake

NEW SOCIAL CLASSES

  • Captains of industries and business men became very wealthy
  • Overshadowed military aristocracy and traditionally privileged classes.
  • Middle class was skilled workers and small business owners
  • The new working class was less skilled and earned low wages

GOALS OF TRADE UNIONS

  • Eliminate abuses of early industrial society
  • Improve working conditions
  • Advance the quest for just and equitable society.
