BLIGHT

  • A disease from America called Blight came to Ireland and infected our potatoes
  • It turned them black and very very slimey

COFFIN SHIPS

  • People got on coffin ships so that they could emigrate to different countries
  • There where a load of diseases on board that killed people

POPULATION

  • In 1845 the population of Ireland was about 8.5 million
  • By the famine had ended 200,000 people had died and 250,000 people left the country

Landlords

  • Landlords started upping the rent for tenants that led to more people being evicted and losing their homes

WORKHOUSES

  • People were often sent to workhouses so that they could at least be fed and paid
  • People that went into workhouses never came out again

SOUP KITCHENS

  • Quakers aka the society of friends opened soup kitchens around Ireland
  • This was to help starving people get food to eat so that they would not die
