ABOUT JACKSON

• Jackson was born in 1767 and raised in North Carolina
• military hero, rich slave owner and had an undemocratic personality
• Interested in asserting strong national, than promoting sectional compromise
• He was inaugurated as president of the US in March 4, 1829

• Jackson & Calhoun both had disagreement on matter of national importance

NULLIFICATION

• Crisis in the 1830's
• Party in South Carolina attempted to nullify federal laws
• Jackson saw this as threat to national unity
• 1st substantial tariff was enacted in 1787
• planters were against the tariffs because duties raised cost of luxury goods
