Introduction of Author:
Robert Crosnoe is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Faculty Research Associate at the Population Research Center at the University of Texas. The Focus of “Health and the Education of Children from Racial/Ethnic Minority and Immigrant Families”:

In the journal, “Health and the Education of Children from Racial/Ethnic Minority and Immigrant Families,” Crosnoe tackles the problems of immigrant families even discussing that “race/ethnicity differentiates young people in terms of their social status, opportunities, and treatment. Immigration also entails a process of acculturation, by which young people and their parents must learn new rules about how American society works (Suarez-Orozco and Suarez-Orozco 2001)” (Crosnoe 9).

Relation to the novel:
The Joy Luck Club highlights the daughters of Chinese-American immigrants and their mothers’ stories. The story reveals that the values of their mothers shape the way they are in America today. The mothers fought battles and adversity to provide a better life for their families and still faced problems by the overpower of American laws. Their stories demonstrate how they rose above that power and even tension with their daughters when life seemed to crumble.

Personal Application:
I can personally relate to this book being the daughter of an immigrant. Although the cultures differ I have been able to infer that every immigrant goes through these situations and even the cultural values overlap. The bond between a mother and daughter can be seen as the same no matter the culture, with love.
