The Jumano Tribe

Medicine And Health

  • We used plants to heal and balance the body. We watched sick animals to see how plants helped animals.
  • Sage was a very important herb; it helped many symptoms and was said to protect us.

Tools and weapons

  • We had lots and lots of weapons, some were hatchets, knifes, bows and arrows, spears and much much more

Acquisition of Food

  • We hunted are food with a bow and arrow.
  • We supplemented with corn, dried squash, beans and other produce from the farming villages.

Region of Texas

  • There were at least three different groups of Jumanos, each living in different regions, the Rio Grande and the Rio Concho rivers in west texas, Old Mexico and New Mexico. Another region was on the southeren plains.

Clothing

  • Men and women wore garments and shoes. Women had brief skirts or aprons and short sleeveless tunics.
  • Both men and women used capes or cloaks for protection against weather.
  • However, we usually wore VERY little clothes so they were known as the naked indians

  • We made pueblo pottery and also made rock paintings

Housing

  • Farmers lived in a house made of adobe and dried mud called pueblos.The houses were very strong and farmer could stand on the flat roofs. The homes were partly underground.
  • The natives lived in usual homes made of sticks, that were easy to pick up and move.

Religion

  • Some had been witnessed to by priest
  • We also performed ritual dances known as Catzinas

Communication

  • We have been identified as speaking a Taroan language

Conflicts

  • in 1599 the apache requested Spanish aid against the Jumano tribe
  • at times the apache mislead the spanich

Tribal Roles & Government

  • We lived in small bands and did not have a chief.
  • Different bands helped each other occasionally.
  • Jumano representatives would visit other groups to ask for help when needed or to trade goods and services.

Economics

  • We traded peyote. plains Jumanos acted as middle men trading goods between larger tribes

interactions

  • We were more open to early explorers
  • We were friendly with other tribes, constantly cultivating friendships, alliances and even intermarriages with native groups such as the Humanas
  • We shared dress style with the Apache
  • We were welcoming to the Spanish explorers, we even lead them on expeditions

Traditions

  • We would perform special dances during harvest season for rain and protection
  • they would celabrate at night with music and dancing
  • they would also tattoo themselfs and men would paint their faces
