THE JURASSIC PERIOD

JURASSIC PERIOD

  • 199.6 to 145.5 million years ago
  • 54-million-year chunk
  • Part of the Mesozoic Era
  • Came after the Cretaceous period
  • Happened before the Triassic period

CLIMATE

  • Most of the climate during the Jurassic period was warm and moist
  • It had a greenhouse climate
  • Most of climate was lush and green

PANGEA

  • Pangea was a supercontinent that was occurring during the Jurassic Period
  • Laurasia moved away from Africa helping form the Atlantic Ocean
  • Enough plates had moved to separate Southern Africa and South America

ANIMALS

  • The Jurassic period is know as the age of dinosaurs
  • It is also known for early mammals and marine life

MEGALOSAURUS

  • The name means "big lizard"
  • Carnivore
  • 30 to 33 feet long, weighed about 1 ton
  • It had long legs, short arms, and large, powerful jaws with sharp teeth

SEISMOSAURUS

  • enormous, long-necked, whip-tailed, small-headed dinosaur
  • 130-170 feet long
  • Herbivore

Ichthyosaurus

  • Marine reptile, was 6.5 feet long, weighed about 200 pounds
  • tall dorsal fin, a half-moon-shaped tail, paddle-like flippers, and smooth skin
  • Diet was mainly fish

PLANTS

  • Many dinosaurs needed plants to survive
  • The carnivore dinosaurs fed on the herbivores of the Jurassic period

  • The hardwoods of today
  • There are 630 living species living today
