First, when

On Tuesday at 5.45am on the 17th of January 1995 is when the disaster took place.

THE COST OF EARTHQUAKE KOBE

  • 5100 people died during the earthquake.
  • Cost $200 billion dollars to rebuild.
  • 20 years later they are still rebuilding.

Next, how

The tectonic plates under the earth shifted in to a convergent position that means they moved towards each other.

Now, why

A tectonic plate is a plate underneath the earths crust which hold up the dirt, rock , metals and minerals and protect us from the earths liquid metal core.

The earths crust and it,s plates are a dynamic floating mass. They move up, down, sideways and away from each other like bumper cars.

There are millions of earthquakes a year from small tremors to major disasters.

Luckily Australia is in a low risk area the last major earthquake was in WA in 1967 in Meckering. It levelled the town which was never rebuilt.
