HISTORY

  • South Korea is sixty nine years old as an independent country.
  • There were several wars in Korea.
  • The Korean War has altered the country.
  • The Korean War lasted for three years.
  • North Korea and South Korea have been fighting ever since.

LANGUAGE

  • Korean is spoken.
  • There is only one official language.
  • South Korea and North Korea both share the same language.
  • Korean is the easiest Asian language to learn.
  • Korean is not related to any other language, except Japanese.

DAILY LIFE

  • People eat lots of food including kimchi, rice, seafood, meat, and vegetables.
  • People wear western-style clothing, hanboks, dresses, trousers, and more.
  • People's homes are high-rise apartment buildings or houses.
  • Parents expect children to go to school and get a good education.
  • Children don't have much time to help around the house or free time.

DAILY LIFE CONTINUED

  • Children have to take care of their parents when they get older.
  • Children have to show respect to their family.
  • Some common jobs include technology, car making, and economics.
  • Korean kids go to school Monday through Friday.
  • Kids learn math, science, Korean, and English at a young age.

  • Elementary school is from 8:20 a.m. through 2 or 3 p.m.
  • Kids have lots of homework in all grades.
  • After school, most kids go to a hokwon, study school until 10 or 11 p.m.
  • Many kids go to summer school with private tutors.
  • Students must bow to their teachers.

RELIGION

  • The main religion in South Korea is Christianity.
  • Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God.
  • They also believe that Jesus died to redeem the sins of all people.
  • Christians believe that God created the world and everything in it.
  • In the early 1800s, Catholics were killed, but now the country accepts them.

SOCIAL GROUPS

  • Koreans group themselves with Confucianism, Christianity, and Buddhism.
  • People's hobbies include soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, and more.
  • In their spare time, they do hiking, card games, listen to music, and more.

ECONOMY

  • South Korea's currency is won (KRW).
  • South Korea makes its money by its industry and exports.
  • Major imports include crude petroleum, petroleum gas, and coal briquettes.
  • Major exports include fish, vegetables, rice, cars, and electronics.

GOVERNMENT

  • South Korea's government is democratic.
  • South Korea's government is made up of nine provinces.
  • South Korea is run by a president.
  • The president serves for five years and has the most power.
  • The president appoints a prime minister to assist him.

ART

  • Types of art in South Korea include poetry, music, plays, and dance.
  • Poetry was originally performed through singing and it is still popular.
  • Folk music and dance are performed with masks, drums, and puppets.
  • Calligraphy is an important type of art.
  • Calligraphy has influenced traditional painting.
